Four anti-bot protection tiers - Static HTML, JS SPAs, Cloudflare, and Akamai - showing Anakin's full coverage across each category

June 2026. Six web scraping APIs, 24 URLs, 144 requests. The URLs are chosen to stress-test the categories that actually break agent pipelines: Cloudflare-protected pages, Akamai-perimeter retail, JS-heavy SPAs, e-commerce product pages, news/media, and standard static HTML. Here's what the best web scraping APIs for AI agents in 2026 actually look like under pressure.

The methodology and raw JSON are open at github.com/Anakin-Inc/scraper-benchmark. Anakin built and ran it - make of that what you will.

Why vanilla fetch breaks for AI agents

Three failure modes hit agents hardest:

JS-rendered SPAs. React, Next.js, and similar frameworks return an empty HTML shell on initial load. Client-side JavaScript fills in the actual content afterward. A plain fetch() gets the shell - not the docs, not the pricing, not the product listings. Sites like Stripe, Vercel, and Next.js docs all work this way.

Anti-bot middleware. Cloudflare, Akamai, and DataDome fingerprint requests by IP reputation, TLS fingerprint, user-agent string, and browser behavior. Cloud function IP ranges are well-known and often pre-blocked. Getting consistent content from sites running these services requires headless browsers that convincingly mimic real Chrome behavior, residential proxy routing, or both.

Session-gated content. Login walls, paywalls, and cart-context pricing require an authenticated browser session. A standard API request with your key can't get past those without session management built into the tool.

A web scraping API solves all three. The question is which one solves them reliably, on the sites that matter for your agent.

How we tested

Tools: Anakin, Firecrawl, ZenRows, ScraperAPI, ScrapingBee, and Tavily Extract - each via their primary scraping or extraction endpoint.

URLs: 24 across six categories. Static HTML (4), JS-heavy SPAs (5), Cloudflare-protected (5), Akamai-protected retail (3: Target and Best Buy AirPods Pro product pages, and Chewy), e-commerce (4), and news/media (3). Full list in the GitHub repo.

Scoring: Each response gets a quality score from 0 to 1. +0.5 for a successful response over 500 bytes. +0.3 for expected content presence. +0.2 for responses over 1,000 bytes. A "pass" requires a full 1.0 score.

One timing note for Anakin: the async job model means benchmarked times include polling overhead (submit then poll until complete). All other tools in this benchmark return synchronously.

Cloudflare bypass: two tools that actually work

Anakin and Firecrawl both went 5/5 on every Cloudflare-protected site. ZenRows - marketed as the anti-bot specialist - went 2/5. ScraperAPI and Tavily went 2/5 and 3/5 respectively. If Cloudflare bypass is the core requirement, Anakin or Firecrawl is the defensible choice. Every other tool in the benchmark dropped at least two Cloudflare pages.

Cloudflare bypass results for 5 protected sites across 6 scraping APIs - Anakin and Firecrawl both 5/5, all other tools scoring 3 or below

Akamai-protected sites: the hardest wall in web scraping

No tool scored above 1/3 on the Akamai category in June (Target and Best Buy AirPods Pro pages, Chewy). Firecrawl got 1/3. Every other tool went 0/3. Akamai's bot manager uses a different fingerprinting approach than Cloudflare - it's stricter on behavioral signals and harder to mimic at the browser level.

Since the benchmark, Anakin has expanded Akamai coverage. Follow-on internal testing successfully retrieved content from homedepot.com, costco.com, nordstrom.com, macys.com, bloomingdales.com, lowes.com, and albertsons.com - all Akamai-protected properties. For sites not yet covered, Wire's catalog handles many Akamai-protected retailers with pre-built endpoints that bypass the problem entirely.

7 Akamai-protected retail domains now accessible via Anakin URL Scraper: Home Depot, Costco, Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Lowe's, and Albertsons

E-commerce is Firecrawl's blind spot

0/4 across the e-commerce category in June - the only tool in the benchmark to score zero there. The pattern extends beyond the 24-URL test: in follow-on internal testing across 43 domains where Firecrawl returned failures, Anakin successfully retrieved content from all 43 - including costco.com, nordstrom.com, homedepot.com, and bloomingdales.com. Firecrawl's rendering pipeline handles Cloudflare configurations well but trips on the anti-bot stacks specific to large-scale retail properties.

Tool breakdown

Anakin

Anakin's URL Scraper runs a headless Chromium instance with proxy rotation. The async job model fits agent pipelines well: submit a job, continue reasoning, poll when the result is ready. No blocking on slow requests.

# Submit a scrape job
curl -X POST https://api.anakin.io/v1/url-scraper \
  -H "X-API-Key: $ANAKIN_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"url": "https://stripe.com/docs", "useBrowser": true}'

# Response: {"jobId": "abc123", "status": "pending"}
# Poll for result
curl https://api.anakin.io/v1/url-scraper/abc123 \
  -H "X-API-Key: $ANAKIN_API_KEY"

# Response: {"status": "completed", "markdown": "...", "durationMs": 2341}

Beyond the URL Scraper, Anakin ships three additional tools agents actually need:

Browser API - Full CDP control over a remote Chromium instance via WebSocket. Run Playwright or Puppeteer commands directly, maintain sessions across requests, use saved credentials for login-gated content.

Agentic Search - Submits a natural language query, runs multi-step web research, returns structured JSON with a summary and citations. Useful when your agent needs synthesized answers from multiple sources rather than raw page content.

Wire - The right tool when scraping isn't the right approach. Wire covers 940+ specific sites (as of August 2026) with purpose-built endpoints that call the site's own background APIs directly. For high-volume work against specific targets - Amazon product data, LinkedIn profiles, government records, financial data - Wire is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than any scraper because it isn't fighting the site's anti-bot stack. It's working with the site's own data feed.

If your target site isn't in the catalog yet, submit a build request - Wire auto-tests the new action against the live site and publishes it on success.

All four tools come through a single MCP connection:

claude mcp add --transport http anakin https://mcp.anakin.io/mcp

Pricing: Scale plan - $100/mo for 120,000 credits. Basic scraping costs 1 credit. JS rendering with Browser API costs 1 credit per 2 minutes. Agentic Search costs 10 credits + 1 per source URL researched. Free tier includes 300 credits, no card required.

Best for: Agents that need reliable Cloudflare bypass and JS rendering. Teams that want URL scraping, agentic search, full browser control, and structured catalog data from one API. Any agent running on an MCP client.

Not ideal for: Synchronous workflows that can't handle async polling. For Akamai-protected sites not yet covered by the URL Scraper, Wire's catalog is the more reliable path.

Firecrawl

Firecrawl's core is HTML-to-markdown/JSON extraction with optional crawling and batch jobs. June 2026: 17/24 (71%). Strong across static HTML (4/4), JS-heavy SPAs (5/5), and Cloudflare (5/5). The e-commerce category was the gap: 0/4.

That 0/4 isn't a benchmark edge case. In follow-on testing across 43 retail domains where Firecrawl returned empty or failed responses, Anakin recovered content from all 43 - including homedepot.com, macys.com, nordstrom.com, costco.com, and sephora.com. Firecrawl's rendering pipeline handles Cloudflare configurations well but trips on the anti-bot stacks specific to large-scale retail properties.

In production, Firecrawl's burst quota is also worth planning around. Session state persists via named profiles - cookies and localStorage carry across scrapes under the same profile name, which works well for login-gated workflows.

The official Firecrawl MCP server covers scraping, crawling, and search.

Pricing: Standard plan - $83/mo (yearly billing) for 100,000 credits at $0.83/1k. Free tier includes 1,000 credits/month.

Best for: LLM pipelines that need bulk crawling and markdown extraction. Strong default for static, JS-heavy, and Cloudflare-protected content - if your agent isn't hitting major retail or e-commerce targets.

Not ideal for: E-commerce and large retail sites. Agents with high burst call rates (429 limits surface quickly without request spacing). Agents that need search, browser control, or structured catalog data alongside scraping.

ZenRows

ZenRows went 2/5 on Cloudflare-protected pages and 46% overall. JS-heavy SPAs were strong at 5/5 - the headless browser renders standard JS cleanly. The Cloudflare failures (Cloudflare About returning 400, Canva Learn returning 429) suggest it handles most Cloudflare configurations but drops on more aggressive challenge modes. E-commerce and news/media were mostly failures, typically with rate limit errors.

Average response time for passing requests was around 9 seconds. Pricing is structured across separate tiers for basic and protected requests.

Pricing: Build plan - $16/mo (45,000 credits). Launch plan - $57/mo (250,000 credits). Basic requests cost 1 credit; JS rendering costs 5 credits per request ($1.14-$1.78/1k depending on plan).

Best for: JS-rendered sites that don't run aggressive Cloudflare configurations. Teams already getting consistent results with ZenRows for their specific targets.

Not ideal for: Sites running Cloudflare's more aggressive challenge modes. E-commerce. Workloads where response time variance matters.

ScraperAPI

42% overall (10/24). With JavaScript rendering enabled, ScraperAPI retries blocked requests until they pass or hit a timeout ceiling. Average response time across all 24 requests with JS rendering: 43 seconds. Of the 24 requests, 19 exceeded 30 seconds. Even passing requests were slow - Vercel and Discord both came in over 40 seconds.

Without JS rendering, it would be faster - but would fail on every SPA and protected site. Basic requests cost 1 credit, but JavaScript rendering costs 5-10 credits per request.

Pricing: Hobby - $49/mo for 100,000 credits ($0.49/1k basic, $2.45-$4.90/1k with JS rendering). Startup - $149/mo for 1M credits.

Best for: Static HTML at low volume where latency isn't a concern.

Not ideal for: Agents. Any workload that involves JS rendering, Cloudflare bypass, or time-sensitive requests.

ScrapingBee

58% overall (14/24) in June 2026. Perfect on JS-heavy SPAs (5/5), moderate on Cloudflare (3/5), and 2/4 on e-commerce. Average response time of 5.7 seconds for passing requests is reasonable for most agent use cases.

Credit multipliers apply for JS rendering and stealth proxy use, so effective cost per request scales with what you're hitting.

Pricing: Freelance - $49/mo for 250,000 credits ($0.196/1k basic). Business - $249/mo for 3M credits ($0.083/1k basic). JS rendering with stealth proxy increases credit cost per request.

Best for: Budget-sensitive pipelines where JS rendering is needed but Cloudflare bypass isn't the primary constraint.

Not ideal for: Agents that need multi-tool coverage, sites with aggressive anti-bot protection, or Akamai-protected retail.

Tavily

Tavily is a search API that also exposes a URL content extraction endpoint - which is what the benchmark tested. 62% overall (15/24). Fastest response in the benchmark at around 2 seconds average. Most expensive at $8/1k - roughly 10x Anakin and Firecrawl per request.

Cloudflare at 3/5, JS-heavy SPAs at 5/5, static HTML at 4/4. Gaps in Akamai (0/3) and e-commerce (1/4). For search-forward agent architectures that need occasional URL extraction at low volume, the combined capability in one API makes sense. For scraping at any real scale, the cost model doesn't.

Pricing: Pay-as-you-go at $0.008 per credit ($8/1k). Free tier: 1,000 credits/month.

Best for: Low-volume research agents that need combined search + URL extraction from a single API.

Not ideal for: High-volume extraction, Cloudflare-heavy targets, e-commerce, or any workload where per-request cost compounds.

How to choose

You need reliable Cloudflare bypass. Anakin or Firecrawl. Both went 5/5 on every Cloudflare-protected site in the benchmark. Firecrawl returns synchronously and has strong crawling support - it's a real contender for Cloudflare-heavy workloads. Just build in spacing between agent calls to stay within burst limits. Anakin's async model handles back-to-back calls without rate limit risk.

Evaluating Firecrawl alternatives? Anakin is the direct swap - same 5/5 Cloudflare performance, stronger e-commerce results (2/4 vs Firecrawl's 0/4), expanded Akamai coverage, and MCP integration for URL scraping, search, and Wire catalog in one connection.

You need high-volume data from specific sites. Don't build a scraper for Amazon, LinkedIn, or Zillow when Wire already has them. Wire's catalog covers 940+ sites (as of August 2026) with pre-built endpoints that call the site's own data feed directly. Wire is cheaper than running a scraper at volume: you're paying for clean structured JSON, not proxies, rendering cycles, and retry logic. If your site isn't in the catalog yet, submit a build request - Wire auto-tests the new action and publishes it on success.

You need full browser control for multi-step interactions. Anakin Browser API. WebSocket connection, Playwright or Puppeteer commands over CDP, saved sessions for login-gated content.

You're building on an MCP client. Anakin is the only tool in this benchmark with a multi-capability MCP server: URL scraping, agentic web research, and Wire catalog access in one connection. Firecrawl's MCP covers scraping and crawling. claude mcp add --transport http anakin https://mcp.anakin.io/mcp covers all three.

You mostly hit static, unprotected content and price is the primary constraint. ScrapingBee at $0.196/1k for the Freelance tier. June 2026: 58% overall, 5/5 on JS-heavy SPAs.

You need search + text extraction and volume is low. Tavily handles this cleanly at $8/1k. Anakin's Agentic Search covers the same use case with structured JSON output and citations.

FAQ

Do these APIs handle login-required pages?

Anakin supports saved sessions: log in once via the dashboard, name the session, pass the session reference in subsequent requests. Credentials are encrypted at rest - they never appear in API responses. Firecrawl supports named profiles that persist cookies and localStorage across scrapes. ZenRows and ScrapingBee offer session options with more limited persistence.

Do these work inside an agent loop in real time?

Yes. Tavily and Firecrawl return synchronously and are fast enough for tight loops where latency matters. Anakin's async model is the right design for agent pipelines that can do other work while waiting - submit the job, continue reasoning, poll when the result is ready. If you're using an MCP client, Anakin's server handles the async polling for you.

What about Bright Data and Oxylabs?

Both are enterprise-grade tools with pricing and onboarding aimed at larger teams. Oxylabs offers a limited free trial (2,000 results, no time limit). Bright Data has a 7-day trial with restricted access. Neither has the developer-first API-key-and-go setup that Anakin or Firecrawl offer. Worth evaluating when your volume and compliance requirements outgrow developer-focused tools - not the starting point for a new agent project. For a third-party view covering enterprise providers, Proxyway's scraping API comparison tests a wider field.

Is this benchmark neutral?

No. Anakin built and ran it. The methodology and raw JSON from the June 2026 run are open at github.com/Anakin-Inc/scraper-benchmark. Read the methodology doc, inspect the scoring, run it against URLs that matter for your use case.
